App review: On{x} takes automating Android apps to a new level
Android has its share of automated task applications, you know, because people are too lazy to do things manually these days. What an automated task application basically does is that, based on certain parameters (time, place etc.) it triggers certain actions (put cell on silent, turn on WiFi etc.).
There are already umpteen task automation applications available on the Play Store – ActionsPro, AutomateIt, Tasker, Markos etc., to name a few. On{x} (pronounced on-ex) is also a task automation application but it is very very different from the others.
What makes On{x} different from its competition is that the possibilities with this app are basically endless. Configuring a task is not restricted to parameters available within the application. Instead, the user can create any parameter and trigger any action as and when he/she pleases. I’ll get to how that’s done in a bit.
Another thing that’s different is that you cannot configure or set your rules with the mobile application. The mobile application just displays the rules or parameters that you’ve set for your phone. This is what the application looks like when it has no parameters or rules (as on{x} calls it) configured.
In order to create rules, you need to visit www.onx.ms from your browser. You will then need to login/signup with your Facebook ID to use On{x}. After you’ve signed in, you either choose to use an existing recipe (pre-configured task), edit a recipe or create your own recipe. Simple enough.
On{x} does all of this by taking advantage of the Javascript API, which is supported natively on all Android phones. Each recipe is basically a few lines of Javascript code that tells the phone what to do when. Even if you don’t know anything about Javascript coding you can easily edit existing recipes to match your needs. You can also discuss your recipes or learn about new recipes which others have created, by visiting the On{X} forum. Additionally, you can also submit your recipe for others to use.
I say this one is a must for everyone with an Android phone.
