AT&T Confirms June 24th Launch Of The 4G LTE, NFC Sony Xperia Ion

We first heard about the Sony Xperia Ion at CES back in January and since then this device has just about gone into hiding and pretty much has been forgotten about. However, that’s now no longer the case. It seems AT&T has confirmed the launch of this quite nice little device will be done on June 24th. Yep, that’s just 10 days away from today. This device will be the first Sony device to support 4G LTE and will also have NFC capabilities.

When it launches, it will be for a cheap price of only $99 which seems super cheap for the specs this device has. The only thing I don’t like is that it will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread by default, but have no fear, there is a definite planned upgrade to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the works according to AT&T and Sony. Below are just a few of the specs this device will have.

  • 1.5 GHz dual core processor
  • HDMI and DLNA connectivity
  • NFC-powered SmartTags
  • 16 GB of internal storage and up to 32 GB microSD slot
  • Dual HD cameras
  • 4.6 inch 720p HD display with the Mobile Bravia Engine

To elaborate on the camera a bit more, the front-facing camera has 720p HD video chat, and the rear camera has a 12 MP lens with Exmor R sensor for better image and video quality.

This device appears to be a pretty decent device and especially if they end up tossing Ice Cream Sandwich on it it could make for one hot seller I think. It seems there are quite a few die-hard Sony Xperia users out there that will only use one of those devices and nothing more. So let us know what you think about this and if you plan on grabbing one on the 24th of this month.

Nice write up Cliff, Thank you! Though this phone is not for me, and it is sad seeing it showing up to the dance wearing gingerbread. Sony does real fine work in the screen department. Then toss in the Mobile Bravia Engine, and it’s going to be pretty sweet looker for sure. Also, who doesn’t want more Mega Pixels! : – )
