CPU Sleeper: The Battery Saver Mod for Any Dual-Core or Quad-Core Android Device on Gingerbread or ICS

Screenshot 2012 07 04 23 15 401 300x264Battery life has always been a touchy subject here in the Android community. Some people have devices that boast enough battery life to get them through the day, while others bitch and complain all day about their battery not living up to the task.

Of course, we’ve all heard numerous tips from people around the web, detailing certain methods of battery consumption that give them favorable results, but there has never been enough to keep the entire community cool.

For those of you rocking a dual-core or quad-core device on either Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich, you might be interested to discover a new application, called “CPU Sleeper”. Based on a script put together by well-known XDA Recognized Developer, eugene373, and built by HandlerExploit, this nifty application will put CPU 1/2/3 OFFLINE when your device screen turns off. Once the screen comes back on, it will allow CPU 1/2/3 back ONLINE.

What does all this mean, you ask? Well, since we have dual & quad-core CPUs, we have a CPU 0 and a CPU 1/2/3, core 0/1/2/3. While the screen is off, we really only need to have one core active — “CPU0″. This app will make sure CPU 1/2/3 shuts off while the screen is off, then resumes normal usage when the screen comes back on.

CPU is available for free to anyone who is a registered member of the XDA-Developers Forums. If you’d like to try it out, make sure you already have an account, then head over to eugene373′s original thread for the download and discussion. Alternatively, there is a script that you may want to install, rather than going the apk route, but I will leave that decision for you to make after you do your homework.

I just installed the app myself, so it’s too early to pass any judgement on this one just yet, but from what we are seeing, everyone seems to be getting good results, thus far. Be sure to stop back and let us know it’s treating you.
