FCC approves of Verizon’s spectrum purchase

Recently, Verizon went on an adventure to find new spectrum to use to keep it LTE network alive, available, and as fast as possible — as if they can just go down to the grocery store and pick some up. They found a company, SpectrumCo (which is a joint company from Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks), that was willing to sell some to them. Now all they had to wait for was the big bad FCC…

Just today the FCC has finally approved of the purchase and Verizon is able to buy SpectrumCo’s…err…spectrum. You can think of spectrum as the certain wireless frequencies need for a particular network, in this case the network is LTE. Verizon has also announce that they plan to use this added spectrum to help continue their quest to have 400 US areas covered in LTE by the beginning of next year — with the whole US covered by 2014.

With buying newer and better “blocks” of spectrum, Verizon is now able to sell their older and weaker blocks to other carriers, which will benefit the other carriers.

So now Verizon has over 370 areas of the US enjoying LTE, and now they’re getting better radio blocks for even a more aggressive and powerful rollout. I’m wondering how AT&T and Sprint are going to catch up to Verizon, and when? Also, what about T-Mobile who doesn’t plan on getting LTE until next year? Good luck to all, I guess.
