Android Custom ROM 300x187

Anyone who uses a custom ROM will agree that one of the drawbacks is the process of updating it. Currently, you check for an update to your ROM on the developers website/forum, you download the latest build on to your phone, reboot into recovery and then flash the new version. Some ROM developers, like CyanogenMod and AOKP, release a new update as frequent as every day, so it can be really tedious to follow that procedure all the time. A new service called OTA Update Center promises to make that tedious process a breeze.

As the name suggests, OTA Update Center is an over the air update service – but for custom ROMs. It works exactly like the OTA service that OEM’s -like Samsung, LG, etc.- provide for their phones. Whenever a new update for your ROM is available you will be notified on your phone, after downloading the ROM you don’t even need to boot into recovery.  OTA update center automatically boots into recovery, flashes the new version and reboots.

OTA Update Center provides a centralized server and an OTA Update app for ROM developers. Developers need to register themselves with OTA Update Center and provide them with the necessary files required for updating a ROM. The rest is taken care off by the OTA Update Center server and the OTA Update app, which a developer will have to integrate with his ROM.

Here are a few screenshots of OTA Update Center in action.
