Google Fiber goes live in Kansas City; subscribers get free Nexus 7 as TV remote

Today was yet another interesting day for Google enthusiasts. In a streamed event on YouTube, the search engine giant unveiled its latest work of art, Google Fiber — and no, we’re not talking about a new breakfast cereal, either.

Residents in Kansas City, MO. can now get a taste of an entirely “Different Kind of Internet”, which boasts a connection speed of up to 100 times faster than today’s average broadband — we’re talking about 1000Mb per second here. In addition to “instant downloads”, customers of the service will also be treated to crystal-clear HD television programming, as well.

While, there is no list of which channels are included yet, but the Google Fiber site states that there are “hundreds of HD channels, tens of thousands of shows and movies on-demand, and all of your favorite Internet content from Netflix and YouTube — all in one place”. There is an image on the site featuring the NFL Network, so that’s already a plus in my book.

Worried about switching to this service and losing your DVR? Don’t be. In fact, you’ll even be upgrading your current setup because Google Fiber allows you to record up to eight programs simultaneously, and 2TB worth of storage to fill with your favorite episodes of Weeds and Dexter. Seriously thoughIf you can find eight shows on at the same time that you actually want to watch, it’s time to consider a better lifestyle.

Even sweeter, Google is giving customers of its Internet/TV combo package a free Nexus 7 tablet to use as a freakin’ TV remote. How awesome is that, right?

So, you’re probably wondering by now how big of a dent is in store for your wallet, assuming you live in the Kansas City area, of course. Initially, there are three different pricing levels:

  • Gigabit + TV - $120/mo – Up to one gigabit upload & download speed, full channel TV lineup, 2 year contract, no data caps,
Nexus 7 tablet, TV Box, storage box, network box, 1TB Google Drive ($120/mo + taxes and fees)
  • Gigabit Internet – $70/mo - Up to one gigabit upload & download, no data caps, year contract, $300 waived construction fee, network box included, 1TB Google Drive ($70/mo + taxes & fees)
  • Free Internet – $0/mo [$300 construction fee (one time or $25/mo for 12 mo)] - Up to 5Mbps download, 1Mbps upload speed, no data caps, free service guaranteed for at least 7 years, includes network box ($300 construction fee (one time or 12 monthly payments of $25) + taxes and fees)
