Google files patent application for radial style menus

RadialMenu1

Well this is interesting. It looks like Google has filed a patent application revealing the potential use of pop out radial style menus in both Android and Chrome OS. According to the application, the menus will be utilized in both smartphones, tablets, and notebook/desktop PC’s. The images provided point to the possibility of single or dual layer application options, all in an effort to navigate through the menu quicker and more efficiently. Although it’s nice to see Google file a patent for a potential new menu option in their OS’, radial styles menus are not a new concept.  In fact, it seems that Apple has filed two similar patents on this feature over the last two years.

I always thought that Android could offer a little more in the way of a menu. The design although functional, is a little clunky and antiquated. It doesn’t ruin the mobile experience, but I’m glad to see that our friends over at Google are looking towards a re-design of the current menu functionality.

Do I hear another Apple patent infringement case brewing in our future? How silly, of course I do!
