Google Play Books update brings Sepia Mode, sliding page-turn, highlighting and more

Heads up bookworms! A new version of Google Play Books is now available for the taking. It includes one specific feature that I’ve seen many a user complain about the fact the Amazon Kindle app offers it, but the search engine giant’s eBook reading application never did until now — Sepia Mode. This should work wonders for readers with sensitive eyes who can’t tolerate long sessions of bright white or black background pages.

Also included in this version is highlighting, notes, dictionary, “Places” info cards, translation, and sliding page-turn. All of which are pretty nice additions. To make use of these features, you will need to use a “Flowing Text” book, where you can now tap and hold to select a portion of text and then highlight, add notes, translate, see definition in dictionary info cards, or see a map and Wikipedia snippet in “Places” info cards, if the selected text is a place.

On a side note, I never noticed this until tonight, but it seems there is a massive selection of free books available on Google Play. Have a look at the entire collection and grab anything that interests you now, while you can. There’s no telling how long these titles will be available for free, and you certainly don’t want to miss out.
