How to root the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE and install ClockworkMod Recovery

So you’ve got yourself a Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE and you want to root it, eh? Lucky for you, it’s not the most difficult of tasks, and XDA Recognized Developer, shabbypenguin, has put together a handy little guide for gaining root access and installing ClockworkMod Recovery on the device.

We take no credit for this guide, nor do we accept any responsibility for anything that goes afoul with your phone in the process.

Before you get started, you’ll want to make sure you unlock your phone’s bootloader. If you’re unsure how to do this, Droid-Life posted a great walkthrough on doing so last month. It’s a 19-step process, so be sure to read and follow all the directions carefully — you may even want to read over them all before you begin, just so you know what you have to contend with.

Once you’re bootloader is unlocked, head over to the original thread on XDA and pick up the cwmrecovery.img and install it using fastboot (the exact code you’ll need to enter is also in the thread).

Once you’ve flashed CWM, it’s time to gain root. Back in that same thread, grab the SuperSU-v0.94.zip file and store it on your device’s SD card. Reboot your phone and flash the zip file in recovery, wipe your cache and dalvik cache, then reboot back into your system and enjoy the privileges of root access.

Unfortunately there are no custom ROM’s available at the time of this post, but it’s still nice to be able to use apps that require root, as well as make Nandroid backups ready in case a ROM does pop up anytime in the near future.
