While we all await the release and shipping dates of the newly announced Google Nexus 7 from ASUS, it seems that every day we are learning a little something new about it or what it does or what it offers. Well, today is no different it seems. This deals with smart covers and not shipping dates or anything like that.

It seems that Google has slipped in a little magnetic sensor on the bottom left side of the tablet that smart covers will be able to utilize. We’ve got a little video for you to watch that demonstrates what it does.

As you can see by the video above, when the magnet hits the edge in that certain little area, the display turns off. When the magnet is removed, the displays immediately comes back on. Definitely a pretty nifty little feature and something that we’ve seen before in years past. Just not on any Android tablet. But of course, leave it to Google to add this great little feature for us.

Unfortunately all of the cases I’ve been seeing for the Nexus 7 floating around the internet appear to open the incorrect way and wouldn’t really be able to utilize this feature. But they aren’t made by Google or backed by Google either so let’s wait and see what Google plans to offer us in the near future.
