This is just the type of news we like to hear here at OMG!Droid. For those of you one the Samsung Galaxy S III watch list, like myself, you probably already know that a ton of development progress has been already been made, and the phone has yet to even reach US shores.

A short while back, we heard that root was achieved for the Galaxy S III. Now, we’re glad to announce that yet another piece of the puzzle has been obtained. Thanks to prominent Android community member and XDA Elite Recognized Developer Chainfire, ClockwordMOD recovery has unofficially been ported over to the device.

While there were a few hiccups along the way, Chainfire has successfully managed to get ClockworkMod 5.5.0.4 up and running. Check out his comments below:

As is the case with every SGS release (it happened with the SGS1 and the SGS2, and now again with the SGS3), CWM source isn’t built to correctly deal with our setup (internal storage vs sdcard). I had to make a number of changes to the source to get it working correctly. From my tests, it all seems to work, but it’s quite possible I missed something (report issues).

(I have tested backup/restore to both internal and external storage, wipes, installing zips from both internal and external, etc, all works as I expect it to)

Aside from the base fixes, there is currently nothing fancy about this build of CWM. I’m not sure if the SGS3 suffers from the brick bug (that SGS2 and Note have), but I patched out the relevant code to be sure (I think). Backups are rather big, system alone is about a GB.

If you’re luck enough to already have your paws on a GSIII, you’ll want to head over to the original thread on XDA for the download, instructions and discussion. As for me, I’ll be patiently waiting for a few weeks until us T-Mobile customers get our time to shine. Now, if only the 21st could just hurry up and get here….

It shouldn’t be much longer now until we start seeing some awesome custom ROMs!
