Samsung Galaxy S III sales skyrocket following Apple patent trial verdict

Now that the guilty verdict has been handed down against Samsung in its patent lawsuit against (Cr)Apple, it’s starting to look like a big “thank you” may also be in order. Not from Apple, however, as Sammy might just be the one to get the last laugh here.

According to Trip Chowdhry, the managing director of equity research at Global Equities Research, sales of the Galaxy S III saw an immediate and “significant” increase in sales following the delivery of the jury’s verdict. Apparently, the analyst made his rounds to several retail locations after the news broke, last Friday night.

He went to five AT&T, five Sprint, three Verizon, and three Costco stores.

Since the verdict, the Samsung Galaxy S III outsold the Apple iPhone 4S at all five Sprint and three Verizon locations that the analyst visited. None of the Verizon stores and just two of the Sprint locations had sold out of the model. Meanwhile, out of three Costco stores visited by the analyst, two were sold out of the AT&T and T-Mobile models of the Samsung Galaxy S III while the third store was sold out of the AT&T variant but had the T-Mobile model in stock.

So, why did people rush out to get the Galaxy S III? Did they assume that the verdict could possibly lead to a ban on the device here in the United States? Were they taking a stand in the #BoycottApple war? Or is it all just a big coincidence?

At any rate, it’s starting to look like Samsung won’t have any troubles paying back that 1.05 billion dollar fine, should they end up losing all of their appeals in court. According to the analyst, expect to see the two companies come to some sort of cross-licensing agreement. We’ll believe that one when we see it.

Sounds like very dubious ‘research’. I came here expecting it, though. As much as I want to believe it’s true.

  • Dan

Both sides have had a lot of publicity. The reason people are not buying iPhones at the moment, is everybody knows that brand-new ones are coming out in two weeks time.

  • skaloot

    I know the girl

  • Fiona

It’s because it’s showing the unwashed masses that they can get something equal to, or better than the iPhone for half the price. This has never been obvious to the public before the ruling.

    • memuser

Your showing your ignorance. The 16gb iPhone and S III are exactly the same price on contract. The 32 gb iPhone is only $50 more. Surely not half the price as you state. Dont follow the rest blindly bashing Apple before you research. It makes you look like an ignorant gSheep.

      • Antony

yeah, the same price, one has a quad core, 720p 4.8″ display and for $50 you can get a 64GB memory stick to fill the gap. It also includes 50GB of free dropbox storage. Now who is showing their ignorance?

      • Aaron Frost

YOU’RE showing YOUR ignorance. #irony And her name is Fiona, not Shirley, which you also misspelled.

        • Guest53

Bwahahaa…Shirely. Are you talking about memuser? He wasn’t calling her “Surely”

          • Retards

I’d wager that was a reference from the 1980 comedy movie “Airplane!”.

“Can you fly this plane and land it?”
            “Surely you can’t be serious.”
“I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.”

      • DieApple

Haha sure your going to get the new iPhone 5 tell me whats new except hardware. Oh that’s right nothing lol..

  • memuser

Dont forget the new iPhone is right around the corner. This would more likely be a reason the iPhone 4s is not selling as well. Cant imagine that many people care for Samsung, the company that copies, to go out and buy a phone. I can imagine how many people, me included, that are holding off purchasing a new iPhone until the new one comes out. This is just more nonsense in the “I Hate Apple” crowd.

Оh yeah? As if Apple invented something significant? The GUI? The mouse? The smartphone? The touchscreen? The icons? The rounded corners? Slide to unlock? The MP3 player? Riiiiight.

LOL YES!!! Shut the fuck up memuser you clueless cunt. Everything that the iphone has done, has been coined by somone else, apple just patented it.

Are you one of these clueless fanbnoys that believe that Apple ‘innovate’. I bet you think they created Siri aswell!

Their OS has striking similarities with many Linux desktops, which is because OS X is built on FreeBSD (Linux and FreeBSD share of lot the same technology). Apple didn’t build on Linux because the License requires that you give back while with FreeBSD you can do what you want. Apple is about polish not innovation. If the patent laws were the way they wanted them when computers first dawned every thing would be horribly screwed up. At one time the GUI was a wondrous idea what if some one was able to patent the scroll bar, or open and close widgets in the corner of a window, or even the idea of an icon? The ideas they want to cover today are no more complicated and will screw up things far into the future.

Apple have never ‘invented’ anything that did not already exist.
They just take it, make it shiny and double the price tag so that clueless elitists will splash their money without even looking at the far better alternatives!

    • fixxmyhead

dude ur fucking retarded and i quote from ur almighty god “good artist copy, great artist steal” and also “we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas”

    • http://www.facebook.com/davielittle David Little

Haha the company that copies :-) Apple cant compete so they sue simple as that. Oh and i have an iPhone before you start but i also hate it :) Peice of crap phones out to random numbers that are not even in my contacts when its locked

    • Javi

Yup. I owned a iphone 3g and the iphone 4. Bought the S3 and I definitely won’t be getting the new iphone…..

  • nate

Apple have been trying to find a way to get back at samsung ever since samsung produced the iphone 4 and then released the S2 that blew iphone 4 out the water… Apple tried to claw back with the 4s…

  • Beef nugget

Don’t Samsung make most of the components in almost ALL electronic devices these days? Apple?

  • Jeroen Versteeg

I don’t think the 1 billion dollar fine is a laughing matter, even if sales increase. Suppose Samsung’s profit margin for the SIII is $200 (I doubt it’s that much), that would mean they’d have to sell 5 million _extra_ phones to make up for it.

    • Hippo

I think Samsung should just up the price on the components they sell to apple for the iPhones, and let Apple pay for themselves. It’s what I would do, it would force apple prices to go up.

  • Simon Majou

If you can’t compete on products, you do patent lawsuits.

People know that, that’s why those trials are backfiring to Apple.

  • Christopher Evert

Well, there’s also that little detail that anyone with a brain in their skull is holding off from buying an iPhone right now because the iPhone 5 is released in 2 weeks.
That being said, I bought a GS3 this week, and three GSIIs for my family, but had zero to do with this court case.
I can’t imagine there’s a causal relationship as is being implied.

Oh my god. I can’t believe a brand new phone is out selling a year old one. /sarcasm

    • miode

Yeah it did..but not a year old phone but two year old phone..4s and 4 the same only siri added/sarcasm

  • hogan

and in the end iphone will thrash samsung! The End!

  • shantaram

Damn, I can’t even replace my battery on a Iphone….sux

  • preecha

    Wow!!! apple so good.

  • Has a life

U all have no lives to be on here talking about who is better. WHO GIVES A SHIT!!! U might as well debate what came first the chicken or the egg!! Grow up people!!

  • David Juliano

All 3 people in my family went out and bought the Galaxy S3 in support of Samsung. Apple is the most fucked up company I have ever seen and we are voting with our wallets to take down apple. We also smashed 2 iphone 4s phones, a macbook pro and an ipod in our driveway with a hammer. Fuck apple and anyone that supports those dipshits.

I didn’t realize one data point makes a trend. Much less a trend that can actually be attributed to the verdict. The author needs to learn a lot.
