Verizon 86′ing Unlimited Data for grandfathered 3G customers

verizon wireless1

Hey, Verizon customers. Looking for a reason to jump ship? Here’s one for ya. If you’re currently among those who have a long enough tenure with VZW to be on a grandfathered Unlimited Data 3G plan, you’ll soon be forced to part ways with your incentive. According to Verizon Communications CFO Fran Shammo, once Verizon launches its new data share plan (supposedly in mid-summer), “Everyone will be on data share.”

Way to thank your long-time customers, guys.

He also went on to say:

“The industry has constrained the market around connected devices because people think they need an additional data plan. If I can add as many devices as I want, that is more efficient from a family perspective and a small business perspective. With the launch of this new data share plan, the industry will have to change a key metric–average revenue per user. Verizon will move to a “revenue per account” metric that will more accurately measure the company’s business.”

Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to us, but we’re definitely no corporate bigwigs with a ton of business experience either. No specific time or pricing information was given regarding the shared data plans, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear something.

For those of you still on grandfathered plans, what are your thoughts? Is this enough to make you start looking elsewhere for cellular service?

I wonder if I can get out of my contract early?

Doubt it. This change won’t take effect until you upgrade to a 4G device thus moving you to the new plan, and new agreement. The change doesn’t impact the current agreement. You will basically have to accept the new terms to upgrade, or don’t upgrade.
